About us

Our Mission

Our mission is to discover and inspire the development of hidden, neglected, or obviously apparent strengths and skills within all those we encounter.

Adventure and Healing in The Last Frontier

Passages Alaska provides safety, solid therapeutic foundations, interventions and uses best practices in all aspects...

Alaska is still truly the last frontier. Nature is literally everywhere. Participants will spend 8 to 12 weeks traveling via canoe, camping on beaches, along the near coastal waters of Prince of Wales Island and Sea Otter Sound. A major portion of the expedition follows a traditional native Alaskan Tlingit canoe route. During the entirety of the program, we witness eagles, ravens, sea and land otters, orcas, humpback whales, seals and sea lions, sea and shore birds, deer, wolves, mink, marten, and beavers in one combination or another literally every day. With so many of our wild animal kingdom family members around, it is easy for a person to come to the realization that we are an inseparable part of something infinitely larger than ourselves. With all this, the rhythms of nature become obviously apparent with the rising and falling of the tide.

In Alaska!

Core Beliefs

We believe that every person is more than the sum of their trials and tribulations. Everyone has a unique set of personal needs and opportunities for growth in their life.

Positive intent: Everybody does things because they believe that that's what is the right thing for them at that time. They are trying to accomplish something positive as they see it.

Individualized Approach
Wilderness Connection
Everyone is working toward a positive goal “as they see it”

We believe that Nature is the greatest healer of all.

Our program offers a unique opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness, fostering a deeper sense of self and appreciation for Nature.

Challenges are a necessary ingredient for any growth.

Individuals function inside of a larger system that they both influence and are influenced by.

History

The idea for Passages Alaska began 12 years ago and has developed to where it is today. Sean Tomkinson, Founder and Clinical Director of Passages Alaska has been leading and outfitting therapeutic expeditions on Prince of Wales Island and its surrounding islands and waterways since 2010. The first time he flew over this collection of islands named the Alexander Archipelago in 2008, he felt the call to adventure and his mind reeled with all of the possibilities that lie ahead. He dreamed of providing the opportunity for youth and their families to have an awakening experience in a breathtaking and otherwise under-discovered place. Since then, numerous students and their families have felt the majesty, experienced the grandeur, and made lasting, life transforming changes.
